Discover Barbaresco DOCG

At Eataly, we want you to get to know the food and drink that inspire us — and that includes wine! Get to know one of our favorite lesser-known wine gems: Barbaresco DOCG!

WHAT IS BARBARESCO DOCG?

Just one sip of this powerful red wine will make you stop day-dreaming about Barolo.

Barbaresco is produced from 100% Nebbiolo grapes in Piemonte, the northern Italian region that also gives us white truffles, egg pasta, and Eataly. To be considered DOCG (need to refresh your certifications?), the grapes can be cultivated only around certain villages (Neive, Treiso, and Barbaresco, with a small zone reaching toward Alba).

These wine "laws" also dictate a slightly shorter aging period than the more famous Barolo. But don't let that fool you! Our Eataly wine experts tell us that, while this may create the illusion that these vini are inferior, many Barbaresco wines are just as powerful and age-worthy.

HOW DOES THE WINE TASTE?

Warning: we are about to wax poetic. May cause longing for Barbaresco.

Ruby red in color, the wine packs layers of fruit, acidity, power, and tannins. An aromatic bouquet of cherries, roses, and dark spices greet the nose; on the palate, the medium-bodied wine offers notes of tart berries, vanilla, and even — some say — hints of truffle.

WHY YOU NEED TO DRINK THIS RIGHT NOW

Have something to toast to? In Piemonte, Barbaresco is a favorite celebratory wine. Uncorking the wine itself is cause for celebration, in fact; no need to wait for special occasions!

Excellent to drink on its own, the bold wine also pairs well with Piemontese specialties, from stuffed agnolotti del plin pasta to roasted lamb.
