Eataly Flatiron Gives Back

Eataly Flatiron Gives Back

Have you noticed our special rooftop garden at Serra? Perhaps some empty oyster shells we're handling with care? That's the look of Eataly Flatiron giving back to our community through local non-profits and charities.

There's a reason that one of the first points of the Eataly manifesto is "Food unites us all." We believe that good food helps us find a common point of view, and is integral to creating community. That's why we're proud to be an active part of our vibrant New York neighborhood.

Whether it's teaching young students about the food system with GrowNYC, helping repopulate the oysters of New York's harbors with the Billion Oyster Project, or working to eliminate food waste while serving those in need, Eataly Flatiron supports local non-profit organizations and charity initiatives, giving back to the community that we love to serve – and that makes us who we are!

Check out the initiatives and organizations that Eataly Flatiron currently takes part in, and see how you can get involved.

Kids urban gardening club, part of the Seed to Plate initiative by GrowNYC

We’re proud to be part of GrowNYC’s Seed to Plate initiative, a program that teaches New York City fifth and sixth graders about our food system. The program introduces students to why healthful, mindful eating is important for their health, the environment, and the community that surrounds them.

Students explore agriculture, nutrition, and cooking through field trips to a Greenmarket, urban farms, and classroom visits from farmers and chefs, film viewings, local food tastings and hands-on prep of delicious, diverse, and healthy food grown in or near New York City!

Here at Eataly NYC Flatiron, we’re sponsoring 75 Morton Street/MS 297, a public middle school that opened in 2018 after years of parent petitioning due to overcrowded middle schools in the area. In order to help keep their Seed to Plate programming going, we are donating a portion of the proceeds from Serra by Birreria to GrowNYC’s Seed to Plate programming. Funds from this donation will support the school’s rooftop garden and student after school gardening club – comprised of an active 100 members!

In addition, we’ll also be hosting select students to join us at our very own cooking school, La Scuola, for a series of fall and winter classes. Chef Leonardo will teach the kids how to transform simple ingredients that the kids harvest in the garden into a delicious Italian meal!

City Harvest and Project Dash

Food waste is a huge problem in a world with so much hunger. So, we never throw away our surplus food. As part of our journey to zero waste and our mission to go green, we are committed to giving our ingredients a second, and sometimes even third, life.

At Eataly NYC Flatiron, our restaurants share that day's leftovers — still fresh and high-quality — with City Harvest volunteers who come to collect leftover food every day. From housemade focaccia to creamy mozzarella, these wholesome and nutritious products are delivered directly to people in need. Not only that, we even donated a portion of proceeds from this year's Negroni Week celebrations!

When it comes to leftover bread and food from our bakery and our quick-service restaurants, these are collected daily by Project DASH, an initiative from delivery service DoorDash that aims to reduce food waste and hunger in the local community.

Oyster farming in New York

Billion Oyster Project

We work directly with the Billion Oyster Project (BOP), a non-profit program that aims to restore one billion oysters into New York. We donate the empty shells from our restaurants: rather than being sent to the landfill, the shells are treated and restored to New York waters as reef substrate. BOP then uses these cured oyster shells to grow new oysters (up to 20 per saved shell!), build oyster habitats, and improve the quality of New York's harbors.

On August 5, 2019, Eataly Flatiron restaurants also participated in National Oyster Day, donating a portion of all sales from our restaurants to BOP.

Plus, we're offering special promotions at Il Pesce and La Piazza for members of the Billion Oyster Project! We are accepting vouchers for 6 free oysters.* Click here to donate or become a member.

Citymeals on Wheels

After learning that their elderly neighbors often had nothing to eat on holidays and weekends, the founders of Citymeals on Wheels knew they had to respond to thousands of New Yorkers in need. Eataly Flatiron has worked with Citymeals on Wheels for initiatives with Manzo, delivering prepared meals to elderly people in need in the neighborhood.

It's been known to happen that some of our guests get a bit too distracted by how good the food is at Eataly Flatiron, and they accidentally leave a hat or scarf behind. For Lost and Found items that go unclaimed, we donate to New York's Goodwill chapters to give clothes a second life.
