Caffè Vergnano Best Barista Competition

Caffè Vergnano Best Barista Competition

Calling all coffee professionals – can you barista like an Italian? Register now to compete in the Caffè Vergnano Best Barista Competition, held this year at Eataly NYC Flatiron on November 11!

BARISTA LIKE AN ITALIAN

Caffè Vergnano is known for their focus on quality roasting, fine origins, and perfect coffee preparation. So hosting a barista competition? A natural next step for the storied coffee brand.

Founded more than 130 years ago as a small grocery shop in Chieri, a small town at the foot of the hills in Torino, Piemonte, Caffè Vergnano is still run by the Vergnano family and sources the highest quality coffee beans from around the world. Given their passion for the craft of coffee and the story behind every cup, Caffè Vergnano founded their own Accademia Vergnano, a school that enables coffee professionals (or caffè aficionados) to learn from expert baristi to gain expertise, experience, and the same attention to detail that has been passed down and perfected by each Vergnano generation.

HOW IT WORKS

Barista life is different in Italy – a little more hectic, a little more chaotic, yet always full of respect for the craft. In the morning, the day starts with a round-robin style competition at La Scuola. Two brave baristi will compete simultaneously on an identical setup and equipment. Each barista will need to complete a typical Italian order that could happen at any moment in an Italian bar, from the smallest macchiato to the frothiest cappuccino.

Each barista will need to work fast to prepare the drinks correctly and serve them to the correct customer. The key to winning? Quality drinks served efficiently, with an eye to customer service. Eight baristi will enter, and only one will be named the Best Barista Competition winner!

Then, in the afternoon, the action will move over to the Caffè Vergnano bar, where two baristi at a time will show off their creative skills with a Latte Art competition. Each barista gets one frothy pour to make an impact, and the barista with the most votes will move on to the next round until one winner remains.

Plus, as a warm-up to this artistic afternoon, Damian Burgess, head of the Accademia Vergnano, and World Barista Champion Agnieszka Rojewska will also be will be at Caffè Vergnano from 1 to 3 p.m. making cappuccini and latte art! For each beverage sold (served in pink cups!), $2 will be donated to the Women in Coffee project.

So, what's in it for these lucky baristi? One grand-prize winner will win a trip to Torino to visit the Caffè Vergnano Premier training campus and roasting facility! Of course, no skilled barista will leave empty-handed: all the participants will receive a special Caffè Vergnano Barista kit at the end of the competition day!
