EAT LIKE A MILANESE

Take the perfect balance of mountains, plains, and a moderate climate, and add to it long-standing artisanal traditions, and you’ve got rich dishes that are at once elevated and comforting. Just in time for the winter chill, Bar Milano will serve hearty Milanese signatures like Risotto allo Zafferano enriched with saffron and bone marrow and Cotoletta alla Milanese, a bone-in veal chop that’s breaded and served with Italian chicories. The menu will also feature unique Milanese specialties like Orecchia di Elefante, a veal cutlet pounded thin and coated in crispy bread crumbs so that it resembles an elephant ear. The dish dates back to 1134, and after one bite you’ll understand its centuries-long appeal.

DRINK LIKE A MILANESE

Florence takes credit for creating the Negroni, but the drink was perfected in Milan. It is a staple of the city’s thriving bar culture and a symbol of hard-working Milanesi seeking an after-work aperitivo. At Bar Milano, the beverage team has recreated Milan’s famous cocktail scene for similarly hard-working New Yorkers. The cocktail list celebrates northern Italian spirits with classic Negronis made with single producer ingredients like the Luxardo Negroni Bianco, a white Negroni made with Luxardo Bitter Bianco and a Luxardo Cherry.

The wine list is dominated by small producers within a 100-mile radius of Milan. The selection includes Barolo from Giacomo Conterno alongside unique picks like Rossese, an indigenous red varietal produced by master winemaker Antonio Perrino on his tiny organic vineyard in the Ligurian foothills. Each wine on the list expresses Northern Italy’s unique terroir and pairs perfectly with the region’s cuisine.

BE A MILANESE

Hidden towards the back of Eataly’s retail market, Bar Milano feels like one of Milan’s beloved speakeasies. Behind the understated exterior, guests will find a meticulous mid-century modern dining room anchored by a rounded marble bar. The interior pays homage to Milan’s art and design scene with reproductions like Otto, L’Oca (1967) by Enzo Mari and works from Bruno Munari. The collection also includes contemporary pieces from the emerging Milanese artist Olimpia Zagnoli. From the emerald leather seats to the warm brass hardware, the aesthetic evokes Milan’s distinct old-world glamour. Every detail encourages guests to become Milanese for the evening, by indulging in an intimate chat over cocktails or enjoying a long dinner with friends.
