Free Pasta Workshops

Free Pasta Workshops

This week, Eataly NYC Downtown is opening a window into Emilia-Romagna as we explore the region’s iconic products during the festivities for La Prima Settimana della Cucina Italiana nel Mondo (The First Week of Italian Cuisine in the World).

From November 18 to 20, learn how to make pasta the way any nonna would in Emilia-Romagna! Held throughout the marketplace, free demonstration-style workshops on making fresh pasta will be led by the "Mariette" teachers from Casa Artusi, a center dedicated to regional Italian cuisine in Emilia-Romagna. In addition to a cooking school, Casa Artusi comprises a library, restaurant, wine cellar, bookshop, museum, and much more.

The Mariette are named for Marietta Sabatini, who was the trusted housekeeper and personal cook of Pellegrino Artusi, the inspirational figure behind Casa Artusi. "Faithful Marietta," as he called her, was an important influence on Pellegrino's work in the gastronomic world over the decades in the late 1800s. He is best known for writing Science in the Kitchen and the Art of Eating Well, the first modern Italian cookbook, and often called the grandfather of Italian cuisine.

Today, Casa Artusi honors Marietta with the Associazione delle Mariette, an association that promotes home cooking and local traditions in Emilia-Romagna through cooking classes, workshops, and more. Instead of following a set curriculum, each teacher shares his or her personal experiences in their home kitchens, humanizing the cooking experience.

And next weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), you can attend one of these workshops at Eataly! During the free demonstrations, you will see how real home cooks in Emilia-Romagna hand-shape the regional specialty of fresh pasta, from stuffed bites of tortellini to long strands of tagliatelle. Throughout each day, the Mariette will be sprinkled across the store, so be on the lookout.
