Discover Radda in Chianti with Castello di Volpaia

The unique micro-region cared for through four generations.

The Florentine family “Della Volpaia” was originally from the village Volpaia, as their name suggests. Lorenzo della Volpaia, a colleague of Leonardo da Vinci, even built the planetary clock for the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. Today, Castello di Volpaia is owned by the Mascheroni Stianti family and has been passed down through three (going on four!) generations. They’ve continued to follow ancient traditions and invested in the area’s agricultural heritage, from wine and oil to the vegetables enjoyed at their table.

The first generation, Raffaello, saw wonder of the hamlet of Volpaia, just north of the town of Radda in Chianti, 2,024 feet above sea level in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. He invited his friends to elaborate dinners that eventually culminated in an annual porchetta banquet in honor of San Lorenzo, Volpaia’s patron saint. The next generation, Carlo and Giovannella, have dedicated their lives to restoring the town to its former glory. The current generation, Nicolò and Federica, have embrace the legacy of timeless values, land, and dreams. Federica travels the world promoting Volpaia. Nicolò is involved with communications, agriculture, and the next generation of Volpaia: his children Allegra, Olivia, and Tito.

In September 2000, the family began the process of becoming certified organic. Long before completing any paperwork, the lands had been farmed organically as a philosophy: no pesticides, no synthetic chemicals, only natural fertilizers. Their wines are made with 100% certified organic grapes from some of the highest-elevation vineyards in the Chianti area. Volpaia Castle is the first love that drew the family in and has grown with them.

Volpaia is part of a unique terroir within the Chianti Classico region. The family’s approximately 45 hectares are on predominantly sandstone soils, ideal for producing elegant, harmonious, age-worthy, and authentic wines. These spectacular wines are created not only by the region’s microclimate, but also with ancient native Sangiovese strains that have been rediscovered and regrafted. Studying the sub-climates has led to the creation of 3 Crus: Coltassala, Il Puro and Balifico, each with its own distinctive characteristics.
