On Tuesday, June 18 renowned chefs, restaurateurs, and food lovers from across the globe held their breath at the reception for the 2018 World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards ceremony as the top restaurant was announced, once again: Osteria Francescana by Chef Massimo Bottura! After steadily climbing the ranks over the last five years, the celebrated Italian restaurant was voted number one by nearly 1,000 gastronomic experts worldwide.

Since 1995, Osteria Francescana has served contemporary Italian food in Modena, a charming, culinary-rich city in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. Critical acclaim began to build starting with the restaurant's first Michelin star in 2002; it was awarded a second four years later and finally a third in 2011. In 2016, Osteria Francescana was voted the number one restaurant during the World's 50 Best Restaurant Award ceremony in New York City.

And now, Massimo has done it again! As the chef and owner for the past 20 years, Massimo has developed his innovative menu and atmosphere around local tradition – with a delicious caveat.

“Our traditions root us in a place, culture and time, but they must never be stagnant,” Massimo says, describing his culinary philosophy. “Traditional food is the result of a successful experiment. We must continue to evolve our palates and our techniques and remain flexible in the kitchen to new ideas, ingredients, and concepts. Only then can we project ourselves into the future and allow our own gastronomic evolution to follow.”

Honoring heritage while embracing modernity, the resulting Osteria Francescana serves simple but daring dishes in an elegant dining space that is heavily influenced by art and music. Surrounded by contemporary artworks, guests enjoy plates like the famous “Five Ages of Parmigiano Reggiano,” which explores the region’s esteemed cheese through temperature, texture, and, of course, taste, or “Autumn in New York,” which reflects the chef’s international outlook and influences.
