As the crisp, cool air of fall and winter sets in, we crave robust red wine to pair with our rich seasonal food.

Enter: Super Tuscans.

These iconic wines are among the most celebrated in Italy; however, they were invented less than 50 years ago, making them newcomers in the wine world. Their story began in the late 1960s, when several daring winemakers in Toscana decided to incorporate modern techniques into the old wine-making traditions (oh my!).

Following a drive to produce a more approachable wine, the winemakers  planted international varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc; blended them with the iconic Sangiovese (considered sacrilege by older winemakers); and aged the must in new, small French oak barrels instead of the large traditional oak barrels.

And just like that, Super Tuscans were born!

Even today, the idea of blending non-indigenous grapes with the revered Sangiovese remains controversial in certain Tuscan circles. However, Super Tuscans have stood the test of time and continue to be enjoyed by wine lovers across the globe.

Once you take a sip, you understand. Often big and rich, the red wines range from fruity and spicy to deep and rustic. What ties them together today is their IGT classification – indicazione geografica tipica. While not quite as strict as the DOC classification, IGT areas of production are often larger (and some winemakers would argue that this allows for even greater creativity). Either way, one thing is sure – each Super Tuscan will bring a unique drinking experience.
