Eataly Wins Retail Award

Eataly Wins Retail Award

In late January 2016, major retailers from across the world flocked to New York City for Retail’s Big Show, the annual convention organized by the National Retail Federation. At the closing ceremony, the award for “International Retailer of the Year” was announced: Eataly!

Nicola Farinetti, Eataly CEO and son of founder Oscar, accepted the award on behalf of the company before the more than 27,000 exhibitors, 300 speakers, and 80 countries represented at the Javits Convention Center.

“It has taken several years to develop our business, but in the end, we have succeeded,” Nicola said, describing his father’s dream of creating a place where people could “eat, shop, and learn about la dolce vita.

“Since the opening of our first store in Torino, I knew that the concept was strong,” he continued. “But, especially abroad, consumers needed time to understand the complexity of our stores.”

EATALY ROMA

The dream is now a reality for the Farinetti family. Born in Alba, Italy, in 1984, Nicola grew up around business while working with his father and brothers at UniEuro, which Oscar grew into Italy's largest consumer electronics company. While attending college in Torino, Nicola studied political science, and soon after graduating, discovered his passion for the food industry while spending time working as a waiter.

With Nicola and his brothers’ desire to create a place that housed the best regional ingredients of Italy and their father’s inspiration from the bazaars of Istanbul, the concept of Eataly was born. Oscar sold UniEuro in 2003 to focus full-time on the Eataly concept, which successfully joins the elements of a lively European open market with an educational center in celebration of Italian food and culture.

In 2007, Oscar founded the first Eataly in Torino, followed closely by additional locations in Italy, Japan, and then the United States. Nicola helped bring the now largest Italian marketplace in the world to the U.S., starting with New York in 2010 and Chicago in 2013. Today, there are 29 locations across the world, with more on the way.
