Italy’s Prime Minister Visits Chicago

On a recent afternoon, Eataly welcomed a familiar figure to our store: Italy’s Prime Minister Matteo Renzi! During his four-day trip to the United States, the Italian premier paid his first official visit to Chicago on March 30, where he met the mayor, spoke at several schools, and enjoyed a lunch of fresh pasta (with a local twist!).

“It was an incredible honor to introduce Eataly Chicago to Prime Minister Renzi,” said Eataly CEO Nicola Farinetti. “We’re proud to show that all of the best food and drink that he knows in Italy are also here, in the heart of the Windy City.”

Nicola and Eataly President Andrea Guerra guided Mr. Renzi and his delegation on a tour through the market. The group then dined at Baffo, our elegant ground-floor restaurant nestled away from the bustling marketplace.

At Eataly Magazine, we had to sneak a peek of the special menu curated by Chef Sam De Los Santos, who felt inspired by spring Illinois produce and traditional Piemontese cuisine. (Okay okay, we can't help it. We'll tell you about one dish: the primo piatto was Agnolotti ai Funghi, pasta filled with mushrooms and finished with a sauce of Parmigiano Reggiano, butter, thyme, and saba. Swoon.) Instead of dessert, the premier finished lunch with a perfect Neapolitan pizza from La Pizza & La Pasta.

After the ultimate pranzo italiano, the delegation was off. Mr. Renzi was heading to Boston and Washington, D.C. next; he will be back in Italy by the weekend.
