Part II: The Next Leg of Our Italian Summer Vacanza

General_01YOUR VACATION STARTS AT EATALY!

Ready to live like an Italian this summer? Let us show you the Eatalian way, with tips and tricks from all of Italy’s culinary hotspots. Follow us on our journey from nord a sud as we share some of our favorite foods from each region. Who says la dolce vita can’t transcend over the Atlantic?

Venice

START WITH A SPRITZ

Every great night starts with a spritz and cicchetti! Kick off your evening with a typical Venetian aperitivo — a drink and some salty snacks. Pair an Aperol spritz with San Carlo Potato Chips to truly capture the charm of sitting in Piazza San Marco on a warm summer evening. A spritz can be customized to your liking, but it always includes Prosecco, club soda, and a bitter. This refreshing, vibrant drink is perfectly paired with something light to munch on before you head to dinner.  Next time you have dinner plans, invite your friends over for a spritz and cicchetti beforehand like a true Venetian!

Parma

A MATCH MADE IN PARMA

Good news! Italy’s cuisine is full of heavenly pairings like spritz and cicchetti. The Emilia-Romagna region's city of Parma has perfected the sweet and salty combination with prosciutto e melone. This easy breezy summer staple is meant to be enjoyed during any time of the day and can be put together in minutes. The sweet fruity taste of cantaloupe melts together seamlessly with paper thin, savory slices of prosciutto. Try this Parma staple at your next al fresco gathering this summer to transport your guests to northern Italy!

Genoa

PESTO, PLEASE!

Before we head down south, we have to stop in Liguria for a classic Genovese pesto. Genoa is famous for its creamy basil sauce that so many of us have come to adore. Traditionally made with a mortar and pestle, the name pesto actually comes from the word pesta, or “to grind.” Pick up fresh ingredients in our marketplace this summer and recreate your own authentic Genovese pesto! Toss it with our housemade fresh pasta and pretend you're on the Ligurian coast.

Firenze

BARBEQUE: BISTECCA STYLE

Just past Liguria is Tuscany — the region home to Firenze and the iconic Bistecca alla Fiorentina. This summer we urge you to trade in your cheeseburgers for a porterhouse, and grill like an Italian! Typically from heritage-breed Chianina cattle, this staple at Tuscan barbecues can be served in your own backyard too. Only a few ingredients are needed to let this steak shine through. Visit our knowledgeable and skilled butchers in our marketplace and mimic the staple Tuscan dish at home!

Sorrento

A CAMPANIA CLASSIC

Spaghetti alle vongole is truly summer in a dish, and no one does it better than Sorrento. In this iconic seaside recipe, briny clams, white wine, garlic, and peperoncino create a light yet intensely flavorful spaghetti sauce. Pick up the ingredients in our marketplace or shop online, and make this Napoletana classic at home to enjoy with a glass of white wine or limoncello! Don’t forget to fare la scarpetta at the end of the meal and soak up the last bits of heaven with a fresh piece of bread!

Perugia

BACI E ABBRACCI FROM PERUGIA

Time for dessert! Our last stop brings us to Perugia, the Umbrian city that is home to Baci chocolates. Luisa Spagnoli first created the hazelnut chocolate treat in 1922, and it has been evolving ever since! A whole hazelnut is enveloped in a double layer of fine Luisa dark chocolate with a gianduia filling — does it get any better than that? This chocolate captures the sweet taste of Umbria and is now produced in a variety of flavors for dessert lovers everywhere. Stop by our marketplace or shop online to try them all and find your favorite!
