Eataly is proud to announce that two of our Rossopomodoro pizzaioli – pizza makers – earned the top two places for the best traditional Neapolitan pizza at the U.S. premiere of the Caputo Cup, Italy’s annual pizza competition, on January 20, 2015. Of the 42 participating pizzaioli, Eataly NYC Flatiron Executive Pizza Chef Gazmir Zeneli took first place, and Eataly Chicago Executive Pizza Chef Francesco Montuori came in second.

Traditionally held in Naples, this year’s Caputo Cup featured pizzaioli from across the U.S. and Canada as they presented their creations to an esteemed panel of judges composed of industry professionals and restaurateurs. Each entry was judged by taste, visual presentation, and originality. Gazmir (pictured above), as first-place winner to capture the crown, received $1,000 and one pallet of Caputo pizza flour.

Many of the pizzaioli who work at Rossopomodoro, the Naples-based pizza company at Eataly’s La Pizza & La Pasta restaurants, are Italian and have been trained according to the very strict pizza standards and traditions of Naples, which is arguably the birthplace of modern-day pizza.

“I believe in the project between Rossopomodoro and Eataly,” said Francesco (pictured below). “I think that partnering together was a winning choice. My team and I work very hard to create genuine Neapolitan pizza, and it feels great to be recognized for our efforts!”

“I decided to treat the competition like my team does every single day at Rossopomodoro at Eataly,” Gazmir agreed, elaborating: “With passion and love and great Italian ingredients!”

In September, Gazmir will move forward in the Caputo Cup’s championship in Naples, competing against the world’s best pizzaioli.
