The Evolution of the Kids' Menu

The Evolution of the Kids' Menu

Across the U.S., select restaurants are redefining the traditional “kids’ menu” by focusing more on simple, quality ingredients. Gradually, chicken tenders are replaced with their wholesome and — more recognizable – counterpart, roast chicken. Instead of bland fries, the plate is balanced with colorful vegetables that are perfectly grilled, seasoned, and presented to make even the pickiest eaters pick up a fork.

At Eataly, our restaurants do not offer typical kids’ menus; instead, our chefs are ready to serve smaller portions of the simplest everyday dishes, such as lasagna with basil pesto, gnocchi with mushroom ragù, and spaghetti with tomato sauce. As the bambini become acquainted with each new ingredient, they form habits that will last a lifetime.

(Read: your child will learn to love their vegetables as much as we do in Italy!)

La Scuola di Eataly, our cooking school, is now teaching smaller students to look for wholesome and healthy meals with our educational program, Kids' Kitchen. Designed to instill a love and understanding of quality foods, each class and tour introduces the simple ingredients that go into favorite dishes, from fresh pasta to meatballs.

“Kids are a lot smarter than people give them credit for a lot of the time,” said Executive Chef Rob Wing of Eataly Chicago. “Don’t force things on them that you know they won’t like: do things in small doses. Slowly introduce different items that you know they will enjoy, and use that as a jumping-off point. If you know they like a particular food, try to present it in different ways – and each way a bit more adventurous.”
