It's summertime, amici, and with the arrival of warmer weather also comes some of our favorite seasonal produce, stone fruit: from yellow and white peaches and nectarines to plums, apricots, cherries, and more! 

FUN FACTS ABOUT STONE FRUIT

1. A cherry tree can be harvested in seven seconds.

2. Astronauts ate the apricots on the Apollo mission to the moon.

3. Alexander the Great brought apricots to Greece.

4. Today, the apricot is cultivated on six continents. Antarctica is the exception.

5. Apricots are members of the rose family. The fruit is also related to peaches, plums, cherries, and almonds.

6. Plums are the second most cultivated fruit in the world.

7. In Georgia, the world's largest peach cobbler measuring 11 ft by 5 ft is made every year.

8. Georgia grows 130 million pounds of the fruit; however, South Carolina and California produce even more each year.

9. Every year, the United States grows 1.9 billion pounds of peaches.

10. Standard-sized peach trees are 25 ft tall and wide. If you have a dwarf tree, it will only grow 6 ft tall and wide.

11. Peach trees produce fruit for about 12 years.

12. To ensure a peach doesn’t overripe before reaching the consumer, the fruit is rinsed through a hydro-cooler (ice-water bath) to stop it from ripening.

13. The average cherry tree has 7,000 cherries.

The first acres of the Masumoto Family Farm were purchased in 1948 by Takashi “Joe” Masumoto, having recently returned to California with his family after being unjustly incarcerated during World War II with 120,000 other Japanese Americans. With family labor and stubborn resilience, the Masumotos enriched the soil and planted roots. Today, the farm is most well-known for growing delicious organic peaches, along with nothing nectarines, apricots, and raisins.

Frog Hollow Farm, one of our producers, is a thriving 242-acre organic farm located in Brentwood, California home to hundreds of trees that produce peaches, nectarines, apricots, and more. Sustainability is an important value that Farmer Al has embraced since choosing to go organic in 1989, from growing practices to the labor required to harvest the farm's bounty of fruit.

Our friends at Family Tree Farms have been around since the 1930s, and the third generation of Jackson family farmers still runs the operation to this day. The farm’s prime location on the western edge of the San Joaquin Valley offers a unique terroir that provides mild winters, early springs, and protection from coastal winds. Known for their blueberries, the Jacksons also grow gorgeous stone fruits, with an all-out focus on flavor, harvesting fruit based on quality above all else.
