The majority of Italy’s regions enjoy a share of coastline along the Mediterranean, Adriatic, or Ionian seas, so it’s no surprise that seafood plays a significant role in the Italian diet. While seafood is often viewed as a light summer fare, it is also traditionally served in bountiful portions to help ring in the winter holiday season. The ancient tradition of eating fish on Christmas Eve dates from the Roman Catholic custom of abstinence from meat and dairy products on the eve of certain holidays, including Christmas.
